COACHING
Working with an Olympic Coach

In 30 years the science of training has come a long way. It has been fascinating to follow, study and adapt as I grow as a coach. Many of the basic principles of conditioning are the same; some have been adapted slightly as science has shown us the most economical way to train for these performance needs. And some beliefs have fallen away completely. The offerings out there, while numerous, are often daunting & difficult to grasp or they are overly simplistic. The terminology is confusing & often what is on offer cannot provide the customization that ultimately determines your individual success.
I started my career as a high school track and cross country coach and very quickly learned how to coach large groups (55 kids!). I discovered how to effectively plan training so that not only the better individuals, but the whole team showed up ready to race when it counted. Those where invaluable years and the experience stood me in good stead when I started producing adult competitors on the world stage.
The most significant challenge the modern athlete faces is choosing an approach that will work the most effectively. You do not want to risk your precious time on a workout plan that is not suited to your exact needs, fitness level & capabilities. Laboriously trying various approaches to see what the best fit might be is inefficient. An approach that works must always be based on:
- an accurate determination of where you are at the outset and during training
- progress according to actual specific physiological adaptations
- tapering to produce a performance commensurate with fitness on race day
After over 25 years of working with every level of athlete, I believe I can provide you with training that suits your lifestyle, ability & adaptation pace, ensuring that your hard work pays the dividends you deserve when your event rolls around.
I pride myself in being able to assess what type of training will best suit the individual – can they handle the high volume, or are they the type of runner who achieves fitness through structured quality. I design workouts & training plans around the individual. This is probably why I took so long to write a training book; Run Workouts for Runners & Triathletes. I needed to be sure that I could remotely teach each individual to determine their specific baseline data before they launch into a training program.
I will soon be making training plans available on the web; please stay tuned. Click here for an example of what a training week delivered by Bobby looks like.
